How to Plan a Secret Wedding Proposal - Tips from a Photographer

Imagine standing beside the person you can’t wait to spend forever with. Now, picture making your proposal as breathtaking as your future together promises to be.

The journey to planning a secret proposal is filled with excitement and, let’s be honest, a fair bit of butterflies in the stomach. It’s not just popping the question or presenting the ring; it’s about weaving a moment so enchanting, so meticulously aligned with your unique love story, that your partner feels every ounce of love and thoughtfulness you’ve poured into it.

Having had the privilege to immortalize these pulse-racing moments through my lens, I’m here, ready to help you plan and execute the perfect secret proposal for your person.

Securing the Ring

One crucial aspect that often goes overlooked in the excitement of planning a secret proposal, especially overseas, is ensuring the engagement ring’s safety. The thought of traveling with such a valuable and significant item can add an extra layer of stress. A practical and often overlooked solution? Consider purchasing the ring at your destination. Not only does this approach minimize the risk of losing it in transit, but it also adds a local touch to your proposal.

Here’s how you can make it work:

  • Plan Ahead: Research jewelers in your destination area well before your trip. Look for reputable ones with good reviews or even those recommended by local contacts.
  • Local Partnerships: Connect with local experts or concierge services, who can offer assistance and even exclusive deals you wouldn’t find otherwise. They can help in liaising with jewelers, ensuring you get the perfect ring for the big question.
  • Customization and Experience: Purchasing the ring locally is also an opportunity to add a unique story to your proposal. Many destinations, like the Bahamas, offer exquisite local jewelry designs that can bring a special, personalized touch to your engagement.

Picking the Perfect Location for Your Secret Proposal

Finding the perfect spot to pop the question is like finding the right words to express your heart: daunting, but oh-so-worth it. If you are in the Bahamas consider the One & Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas for its sheer elegance and breathtaking views, where the ocean itself seems to pause for your big moment. The best part is you’ve already got plenty of inspiration to lean on! Justin chose to set up a beautiful rose-petal heart and after the “Yes!” from Julia, they spent the afternoon down by the beach where they captured their first moments as Mr. and Mrs. to be…

If you’re looking for more ideal locations for your secret proposal around the Bahamas, here are some photographer/videographer-approved spots that I’ve scouted around the Bahamas:

  • Atlantis Paradise IslandAtlantis Paradise Island offers an enchanting blend of beauty, luxury, and seclusion, making it an ideal setting for a secret proposal. With its stunning tropical surroundings, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters, Atlantis provides a romantic backdrop for a memorable moment. Additionally, the resort offers various private and intimate settings, such as secluded beach coves or picturesque gardens, perfect for a quiet and personal proposal away from prying eyes. Whether it’s a sunset stroll along the shoreline or a private dinner under the stars, Atlantis Paradise Island sets the stage for a proposal that will be cherished forever. Here is a few ideas of what is possible at The Atlantis.
  • Cabbage Beach: Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island offers a secluded and serene ambiance, making it an idyllic spot for a secret proposal. Nestled along the pristine coastline with soft, powdery sand and gentle waves, Cabbage Beach provides a picturesque setting for a romantic moment. Its natural beauty, coupled with the peaceful atmosphere and minimal crowds, ensures privacy and intimacy for the proposal. Whether it’s a sunrise stroll, a quiet picnic by the shore, or a sunset gaze over the horizon, Cabbage Beach offers countless opportunities for a heartfelt and unforgettable proposal experience.
  • The Cloister: The Cloister on Paradise Island exudes timeless elegance and charm, making it an enchanting location for a secret proposal. With its stunning architecture, lush gardens, and tranquil atmosphere, the Cloister offers a romantic and intimate setting for a memorable moment. Hidden within its graceful arches and winding pathways, couples can find secluded alcoves and quiet corners perfect for a private declaration of love. Whether it’s a whispered proposal amidst the fragrant blooms or a heartfelt moment beneath the dappled sunlight filtering through the ancient ruins, the Cloister provides a picturesque backdrop for a truly unforgettable proposal experience.
  • Sandy Port Pier: The pier at Sandyport Bahamas offers a picturesque and intimate setting, making it an ideal location for a secret proposal. With its serene waterfront views, gentle sea breezes, and breathtaking sunsets, the pier provides a romantic backdrop for a memorable moment. Its secluded location away from the hustle and bustle of tourist crowds ensures privacy and intimacy for the proposal. Whether it’s a quiet evening stroll along the pier, a candlelit dinner overlooking the shimmering waters, or a moonlit embrace beneath the starry sky, the pier at Sandyport Bahamas sets the stage for a heartfelt and unforgettable proposal experience.

Here’s my straightforward advice for picking a location for your own proposal:

    • Consider Accessibility: The One & Only Ocean Club is ideal because it’s easily accessible while still feeling exclusive. You want a spot that’s easy for you to manage logistically but still has that ‘wow’ factor.
    • Think About Privacy: Justin and Julia had their heart set on a moment that was just theirs. Look for locations that offer private spots or times of day when crowds are minimal.
    • Reflect on Your Story: Choose a location that means something to you both. It could be where you first met, had your first vacation together, or just a place you both love.
    • Check for Permissions: Some places, especially private resorts like the One & Only Ocean Club, might require permission for photography or special arrangements. Make sure you check this in advance.

Hire the Right Photographer During Your Secret Proposal

The hardest part of any secret proposal? Keeping the excitement and set up under wraps. I can’t stress enough how important it is to work with a photographer/videographer who knows how to blend into the background like a chameleon with a camera. They’ll capture every gasp, every tear, and that joyous ‘yes’ without casting a shadow of suspicion. It’s all about planning, from the perfect excuse to get your partner dolled up (“We’re just having a fancy dinner, my love”) to the signal that lets your photographer know the moment is nigh.

After the Yes of Your Secret Proposal

The proposal might be a surprise, but what comes next should be a journey you embark on together. From choosing the right way to share your news with the world (because let’s face it, the photos and video are going to be epic) to starting the wedding planning process, remember to savor every step. This is just the beginning of your adventure together.

Tips to Prepare for Your Engagement Photoshoot in 2024 - From a Photographer

So you got engaged… Congratulations!

Other than the obvious wedding planning questions of when, how, who, and wow running through your mind right now, you’re probably thinking of how to go about preparing for your engagement photos.

If you were on the receiving end of a surprise proposal we hope you’re reading this early, but if not, there are many important aspects to consider.

The creation of stunning engagement photos largely depends on your photographer’s skill and expertise. Nevertheless, you are still the star of the show.

Staying relaxed and feeling confident shows. Even through the lens. With that in mind, let’s jump into my top 5 tips to prepare you for your engagement photoshoot.

Oh, and a little heads-up! Even if you’ve got all this down, your partner might need a nudge, especially if they think flip-flops and a tee are photo-ready. Don’t forget to share this with them before you set your date.

Tip #1: Start With the Location

Location is everything!

The location will ultimately set the mood for your entire engagement photoshoot. From the time of day, you will schedule it to what you’ll be wearing, and even what props you can incorporate into the pictures.

When scouting for a location for your engagement photoshoot, think about places that are meaningful to you as a couple or offer stunning backdrops.

Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for suggestions or hidden gems. A lot of couples I team up with here in the Bahamas are kinda at a loss on where to begin. Lucky for them, I’m a proud local and always excited to share a few of my own hidden treasures around the islands.

Tip #2: Pick Out the Right Outfits

Choosing the right outfits for your engagement shoot isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling good together and reflecting your personalities.

Think complementary colors, not matching sets – you want to look like a duo, not twins!

Consider the location and season to ensure your outfits not only look stunning but are also comfortable. And remember, your outfit choices should resonate with the overall vibe you’re going for.

Tip #3: Book Early to Get Your Preferred Time

Lighting can make or break your engagement photos, depending on the location you have chosen.

The golden hour – that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset – offers soft, warm lighting that can add an ethereal glow to your engagement photos.

Coordinate with your photographer to schedule your shoot during these times for the most flattering natural light.

Don’t worry if the weather doesn’t cooperate on the day of your shoot. Overcast skies can also provide a unique, moody backdrop that’s equally captivating. Embrace the moment and trust your photographer to make the most of it.

Tip #4: Test Out Your Look and Makeup

Before the big day of your engagement shoot, take some time to experiment with your look and makeup.

Just like a trial run with a hairstylist before your wedding day, consider doing the same for your engagement shoot makeup. If you’re planning to hire a professional makeup artist, schedule a trial session to fine-tune your look.

This way, you can adjust anything that doesn’t feel quite right ahead of time.

We want you to be as confident as possible during your clicks, so preparing well ahead of time will definitely pay off.

Tip #5: Bring Props!

Your engagement photos should tell your story.

Including elements that are uniquely ‘you’ can add a personal touch that makes your photos stand out. Think about props, hobbies, or even pets that can help convey your love story and personalities.

Whether it’s a vintage bike you both love to ride, books from your favorite authors, or a picnic setup with your favorite wine, these details can add depth and meaning to your photos.
