Tips to Prepare for Your Engagement Photoshoot in 2024 - From a Photographer

So you got engaged… Congratulations!

Other than the obvious wedding planning questions of when, how, who, and wow running through your mind right now, you’re probably thinking of how to go about preparing for your engagement photos.

If you were on the receiving end of a surprise proposal we hope you’re reading this early, but if not, there are many important aspects to consider.

The creation of stunning engagement photos largely depends on your photographer’s skill and expertise. Nevertheless, you are still the star of the show.

Staying relaxed and feeling confident shows. Even through the lens. With that in mind, let’s jump into my top 5 tips to prepare you for your engagement photoshoot.

Oh, and a little heads-up! Even if you’ve got all this down, your partner might need a nudge, especially if they think flip-flops and a tee are photo-ready. Don’t forget to share this with them before you set your date.

Tip #1: Start With the Location

Location is everything!

The location will ultimately set the mood for your entire engagement photoshoot. From the time of day, you will schedule it to what you’ll be wearing, and even what props you can incorporate into the pictures.

When scouting for a location for your engagement photoshoot, think about places that are meaningful to you as a couple or offer stunning backdrops.

Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for suggestions or hidden gems. A lot of couples I team up with here in the Bahamas are kinda at a loss on where to begin. Lucky for them, I’m a proud local and always excited to share a few of my own hidden treasures around the islands.

Tip #2: Pick Out the Right Outfits

Choosing the right outfits for your engagement shoot isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling good together and reflecting your personalities.

Think complementary colors, not matching sets – you want to look like a duo, not twins!

Consider the location and season to ensure your outfits not only look stunning but are also comfortable. And remember, your outfit choices should resonate with the overall vibe you’re going for.

Tip #3: Book Early to Get Your Preferred Time

Lighting can make or break your engagement photos, depending on the location you have chosen.

The golden hour – that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset – offers soft, warm lighting that can add an ethereal glow to your engagement photos.

Coordinate with your photographer to schedule your shoot during these times for the most flattering natural light.

Don’t worry if the weather doesn’t cooperate on the day of your shoot. Overcast skies can also provide a unique, moody backdrop that’s equally captivating. Embrace the moment and trust your photographer to make the most of it.

Tip #4: Test Out Your Look and Makeup

Before the big day of your engagement shoot, take some time to experiment with your look and makeup.

Just like a trial run with a hairstylist before your wedding day, consider doing the same for your engagement shoot makeup. If you’re planning to hire a professional makeup artist, schedule a trial session to fine-tune your look.

This way, you can adjust anything that doesn’t feel quite right ahead of time.

We want you to be as confident as possible during your clicks, so preparing well ahead of time will definitely pay off.

Tip #5: Bring Props!

Your engagement photos should tell your story.

Including elements that are uniquely ‘you’ can add a personal touch that makes your photos stand out. Think about props, hobbies, or even pets that can help convey your love story and personalities.

Whether it’s a vintage bike you both love to ride, books from your favorite authors, or a picnic setup with your favorite wine, these details can add depth and meaning to your photos.
